Some places feel as if they were ripped from a dream: Glacier National Park is one of those places. If you’ve ever wondered where you could find unblemished alpine meadows, towering snow capped peaks and crystal clear lakes all in one place, here you go. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited this park, and trust me, it’s a memory that isn’t easily forgotten. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a wildlife enthusiast or someone who just loves taking in stunning views, Glacier National Park has got you covered.
Why You Should Add Glacier National Park to Your Bucket List
Glacier National Park in Montana is known as the “Crown of the Continent” for a reason. Its rugged terrains and varied ecosystems make it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. When I got there, I was gobsmacked by the immense size of the place. The park covers more than 1 million acres and contains over 700 miles of hiking trails. But if you’re like I am, and you like a good adventure, there are countless options for exploration.
The Iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road
One of my trip highlights was driving along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Engineering marvel, this 50-mile scenic drive takes you through the heart of the park with jaw-dropping views around every turn. As I drove, I had to pull over every few minutes to snap photos; the vistas are that beautiful. If you do visit, be sure to stop at Logan Pass, the road’s summit. It’s a nice place to get out, stretch your legs and perhaps spot a mountain goat or two.
Hiking Trails for All Skill Levels
Glacier National Park has trails to accommodate every level of hiker, from experienced pros to first-timers. And one of my favorite hikes is the Highline Trail that begins at Logan Pass. The trail clings to the Garden Wall, a steep rock face, with sweeping vistas of the park. For a challenge, the Grinnell Glacier Trail is another no-brainer. That reward at the end — a stunning glacier-fed lake — makes every step worthwhile.
Wildlife Encounters That You Will Never Forget
One thing you’ll come to appreciate about Glacier National Park is that you’re sharing the place with some magnificent wildlife. On my trip, I saw grizzly bears, bighorn sheep and a moose. Just be sure to admire from a safe distance and respect their habitat. After all, it is their home, and we’re simply guests.
The Magic of Glacier’s Lakes
A must do in Glacier National Park is to spend time by its iconic lakes. Lake McDonald, known for its colorful pebbles and mirror-like appearance, is ideal for resting in between the scenery. For the more adventurous, rent a kayak and head out on the water. Trust me, when the sun sets and you see the mountains reflection in the lake, nothing compares.
